Favorite 5: June 2015

At the beginning of every month I’ll let you know what my top 5 favorites were in makeup and/or skincare for the previous month.

Here’s what I loved during the month of June:

1. Makeup Geek Blush in Secret Admirer

Makeup Geek is a makeup brand started by YouTuber Marlena Stell (Makeup Geek). After hearing so much hype, I had to try this brand out for myself. I LOVE this blush. It is such a pretty light orchid color that is buildable—a little does go a long way though. I find that this color goes with everything and is a really nice, fresh summer blush color. It goes on smoothly and is very blendable. If all Makeup Geek blushes are like this one (I only own Secret Admirer) then I would definitely recommend them. This has become my go-to blush.

2. Pixi by Petra Beauty Bronzer in Summertime and Luxie 2015 Tapered Blending Brush

Both of these came in my May ipsy glam bag. I could swear they came earlier than that because I have used them so much I feel like I’ve had them forever (in a good way). I felt that the Pixi bronzer was too shimmery for a bronzer so I set out to find a different way to use it. I absolutely love this as an eyeshadow crease color. Like, cannot stop using it love it. I use the Luxie 205 Tapered Blending Brush to apply it. The bronzer does not come off too shimmery in the crease (which makes me wonder if I can actually use it as a bronzer….) and the brush applies it perfectly. The brush diffuses the shadow and blends it nicely with the other shadow colors I have on. I will be getting another one of these brushes as some point; it is the crease brush I have been searching for for months.

3. Lip Combination: NYX High Voltage Lipstick in HVLS05 Flutter Kiss and Make Up For Ever Artist Plexi Gloss in 202 Sweet Pink

I did a full review of the NYX High Voltage Lipsticks (read it here). I didn’t like the formula of these at first; I don’t know if it had something to do with the top layer of the product or what, but I don’t have the same issue as before with Flutter Kiss. However, I still find the brighter/darker (e.g., Rockstar) difficult to work with—it gets everywhere and is so creamy it is hard to get a defined edge on the lips. Flutter Kiss is a muted mauve color and I have just been drawn to it a lot the last several weeks. It is a great neutral with a hint of color that goes with everything. Since it is on the darker side for a neutral color, I’ve been putting the MUFE Artist Plexi Gloss in Sweet Pink over it (I got this as a 100 point perk from Sephora.com). The lipstick is on the matte-r side so the gloss gives it a little life for summertime. The gloss is a tad sticky, but nothing that annoys me too much. It has a little bit of color but still lets the Flutter Kiss color come through.

4. it Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil in Universal Taupe
I’ve never tried a high end brow product before, so I was very happy to see this in my June ipsy glam bag. Since I received it I haven’t used any other brow product. As you can see from the swatch below, you can get a range of colors out of this universal brow pencil. It looks very natural and I like that I can build the color up and therefore don’t make my brows darker than they need to be. There is also a spoolie brush on one end to brush and shape your brows and help diffuse the product. There is a good amount of product in this sample size so I hope it lasts awhile. I’m not sure I’m prepared to spend $24 on a brow pencil.

 5. tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Airbrush Foundation in Fair-Light Neutral

I haven’t much felt like wearing liquid foundation since it’s summer; however, powder foundations are usually don’t provide me with the full coverage I need. I tried this foundation on at Sephora once and was on the fence about it. I decided to give it a full go a while ago and I’m so happy that I did. It provides medium coverage for me and looks very natural (not powdery at all). Like many tarte products (for me, at least), it takes a few minutes for it to warm up to your skin and look good. At first it looks powdery and not quite the right color, but after a few minutes it looks great. It’s very easy to apply—I use the Airbuki Bamboo Powder Foundation Brush—and it’s buildable. The brush has very tightly packed, short bristles that apply the foundation quickly and blends it nicely.

The loose powder is kept under a mesh cover which is nice because the cover keeps the powder from getting everywhere. My only complaint is that my t-zone gets a little oily when I wear this foundation and that doesn’t usually happen with liquid foundation. There are also ingredients in this foundation that are supposed to be good for your skin (e.g., Amazonian clay, camellia leaf extract, pearl powder), something that tarte is known for.

Now that I’ve written this, I realize that I pretty much created an entire look with the 5 products I’ve mentioned above—just add some mascara! Well, that’s what I was wearing through June—good thing they all go together! What products have you been loving lately? Be sure to let me know!
