Welcome the
first of four posts on face primers! I have been trying out a bunch of face
primers lately so I figured I would have a theme week featuring them. This
first post will outline why I like to use face primer and the pros to using a
face primer.
What is a Face Primer?
A face
primer is a product that is meant to prolong the wear of your makeup (mainly
foundation, powder, BB cream, whatever you use) and provide a smooth canvas for
your makeup to go onto.
When Do You Use a Face Primer?
A face
primer is meant to go on after skincare (e.g., serum, moisturizer) and before
your base (e.g., foundation, BB cream).
Types of Face Primers
There are
three main types of face primers I have experienced—silicone-based lotiony (e.g., BareMinerals Prime Time, my favorite),
water-based (Laura Geller Spackle—review coming this week) and silicone-based balmy(e.g., Benefit
Porefessional, Smashbox Photo Finish). Silicone-based/lotiony face primers tend
to be more hydrating and have a slight gel-like consistency. Water-based face
primers feel like a lotion or moisturizer and silicone-based/balmy face primers
are generally used for more targeted coverage, such as in the t-zone where
people tend to be the oiliest and have the largest pores. I find these types of
primers a little harder to blend and they do not sit well on my skin. I tend to
reach for the silicone-based face primers the most.
What are the Advantages of Using a
Face Primer?
- Creates smooth canvas for base (e.g., foundation)
application
- Lengthens makeup wear because it adheres to base
and minimizes breakdown due to oil
- Can hydrate, mattify, reduce redness, minimize
pore appearance, illuminate, even out texture and more depending on skin
and primer type
- Creates barrier between skin and environment
(e.g., dust, pollution, oil on hands)
What are the Disadvantages of Using
a Face Primer?
- It’s an extra step
- It might not react well with your skin
- Some face primers cause your base to breakdown
quickly (the total opposite of the point of a face primer)
- To me, there really are none—I love face primers!
All that
being said, some people find that they do not need face primer, think it’s an
unnecessary step or face primer doesn’t work for them. I personally love face
primer (can you tell?) and it not only keeps my makeup in place, but acts as
skincare for me. Even when I am not wearing foundation, I put on face primer to
protect my skin from environmental pollutants and oil from my fingers.
Do you use
face primer? If so, which one? Stay tuned this week for a review, a Bye Bye Beauty and a
Beauty Battle all featuring face primers!
