Review of Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara

If you are part of Sephora’s Beauty Insider Club (it’s akin to a grocery store rewards card), you get at least one point for every dollar you spend. You can then use those points to receive deluxe size samples of products. I used my points to try the YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils in (I believe, there is no color marked on the tube) 1 High Density Black. This mascara is normally $32. As you may have seen in my Saving Series posts, I regularly get mascara for free so I won’t pay top dollar for it. Plus, you should only use mascara for about 3 months before switching tubes to avoid bacteria, etc. So, when Sephora has high-end mascara as point perks I usually pick them up since this will be the only way I would try them.

This mascara claims to be non-drying and full of vitamins. Lashes are supposed to look thicker, with a lot of volume, and like false lashes.

To begin with, the mascara brush is very long. I ended up getting product on my eyebrows because the brush is so big. Moving past that, I found the formula itself to be very dry. This mascara has a very natural look—certainly not like false lashes—and I had to apply two coats when I normally wear only one. There was no fallout or smudging during the day, which is always a big bonus. When I went to wash my face, it was very hard to wash the mascara off  and often left big smudges under my eyes even after using a remover and face wash. I needed to put moisturizer under my eyes and then use a tissue to wipe the moisturizer and mascara off. I can’t imagine what would happen if you rubbed your eyes and got this mascara everywhere!

I’m not sure if the formula is different in the samples or if samples sit around for awhile, but this mascara did not live up to the claims. Glad I didn’t spend $32 on it!

Disclaimer: I used my Sephora points to receive this mascara free of charge. All opinions are 100% honest and my own. I do not provide positive reviews for payment. Products that work for me may not necessarily work for you. I am not affiliated with Sephora or YSL.
